What is Benzalkonium Chloride?

Benzalkonium chloride, also known as alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride and ADBAC, is a mixture of alkylbenzyldimethylammonium chlorides with carbon chains of different lengths. This product is a cationic surfactant of the quaternary ammonium family.

Benzalkonium chloride is easily soluble in ethanol and acetone. While dissolving in water is slow, aqueous solutions are easier to use and more widely used. Solutions should be neutral to slightly basic with a color ranging from colorless to pale yellow. Solutions foam strongly when shaken, taste bitter and have an almond odor detectable only in concentrated samples.

What is benzalkonium chloride used for?

The applications are very varied, ranging from the formulation of disinfectants to the inhibition of “microbial corrosion” in petroleum or mineral oils. It is used in pharmaceutical products such as antiseptic skin solutions or wipes. It is used as a preservative in cosmetics such as eye and nose drops. Cases of sensitization associated with continuous and prolonged use of the product have been reported. Gloves should be worn before use.

Regulation

Benzalkonium chloride is one of the active substances (together with didecyldimethylammonium chloride) subject to the approval decision for product-types 1, 2, 3 and 4 of October 20205 of the Biocidal Products Committee.

The approval dates for the active substance ADBAC are as follows:

for product types 1 and 2: expected in 2023;
for product type 3 and 4: November 1, 2022

This means that after the various approval dates, a marketing authorization (MA) will be required to continue to market products containing benzalkonium chloride.
