What is Butylated Hydroxytoluene?
Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) is a chemical compound from the group of toluene derivatives or phenols, which is manufactured industrially and used in significant quantities. Phytoplankton such as the green alga Botryococcus braunii and the cyanobacteria Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, Microcystis aeruginosa and Oscillatoria sp. form BHT as shown by GC-MS.
What is Butylhydroxytoluene used for?
BHT is used in many consumer products, for example: paints, waxes, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals or packaging materials. It is mainly used as an antioxidant to prevent or delay changes in products due to atmospheric oxygen. The addition as a stabilizer to diethyl ether or tetrahydrofuran prevents the formation of dangerous ether peroxides.
It also serves to stabilize biodiesel.
