What is Caffeine?
Caffeine, also called theine or 1,3,7-trimethylxanthin or methyltheobromine, is an alkaloid of the methylxanthine family, present in many foods, that acts as a psychotropic stimulant and as a mild diuretic.
Caffeine was discovered in 1819 by the German chemist Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge. He called it "Kaffein" as a chemical compound of coffee, which in French became "caffeine".
Caffeine is present in the seeds, leaves and fruits of various plants, where it acts as a natural insecticide, paralyzing or killing the insects they consume. In contrast, caffeine in mammals acts primarily as a stimulant of the central nervous and cardiovascular systems, temporarily reducing drowsiness and reaction time and increasing attention.
Very popular drinks contain caffeine such as coffee and tea. It is also found in some soft drinks and energy drinks made from kola nut derivatives, which contain large amounts. Cocoa also contains some.
Caffeine is particularly present in the seeds of the coffee tree and guarana, as well as in the leaves of yerba mate and tea tree. Due to its presence in plants other than the coffee tree, it is sometimes called "theine", "guaranine" or even "mateine". However, it is the same molecule, with the formula C8H10N4O2, with the same effects, even if it is not consumed alone or in the same way and is not present in the same concentration as in the coffee.
In fact, caffeine is the most consumed psychoactive substance in the world; it is legal in all countries, unlike other psychoactive substances. The stimulating analeptic psychotropic profile of caffeine was determined by quantitative electroencephalography following oral administration of a high dose (400 mg) versus placebo in healthy volunteers. It causes tachycardia and mental stimulation for several hours, followed by insomnia. In North America, 90% of adults consume caffeine daily. The Food and Drug Administration calls caffeine a "generally recognized as a safe multifunction nutrient" at usual doses, but toxic above a certain dose.
