What is Copper Nitrate?
Copper(II) nitrate is an inorganic substance with the formula Cu(NO3)2 is a salt of divalent copper and nitric acid. It is a blue crystalline solid.
Application
Copper(II) nitrate is used to obtain pure copper(II) oxide, copper-containing catalysts, as a fungicide and mordant for fabric dyeing.
In combination with acetic anhydride, it is used in organic synthesis as a reagent for the nitration of aromatic compounds (the so-called Mencke conditions).
Copper(II) nitrate is used as an ink for cans, to color copper black and to bluish iron.
Toxicity
Copper(II) nitrate is a moderately toxic substance - LD50 for rats orally 950 mg/kg (trihydrate).
Causes irritation in contact with skin and mucous membranes, in contact with eyes - severe irritation with risk of corneal clouding.
