What is Copper Sulphate?

Copper (II) sulfate is used in horticulture, it is a fertilizer that must be present in very small quantities. A traditional pesticide against mildew is Bordeaux porridge, a solution of 2 parts by weight of copper(II) sulfate, 1 part of lime in 100 parts of water.

What is Copper(II) sulfate used for?

In cattle farming, copper (II) sulfate is used in foot baths to combat infections, such as Mortellaro's disease, in the hooves of the cattle. Sometimes this is done in combination with formalin.

It can also act as an antidote for phosphorus poisoning. It is also used to preserve wood.

Copper(II) sulfate is used in a number of classical analytical reactions, such as the biuret reaction and in the Fehling's reagent.

Anhydrous copper(II) sulfate is used to detect traces of water in some liquids, because the salt acquires the characteristic blue color upon contact with water. This color effect is caused by the fact that the Cu2+ ion can be hydrated . In the anhydrous, white form, it is surrounded by sulfate ions. In the hydrated form, a number of water molecules are located between the copper ion and the sulfate ions. The difference in coordination leads to a change in energy states of the d electrons of the copper ion and thus to different optical properties.

The crystal water of the copper (II) sulphate can be replaced by ammonia. A complex ion is then formed ([Cu(NH3)4]2+, the tetramminecopper(II) ion) that shows an intensive blue-purple color. This ammine complex is called tetrammine copper(II) sulfate.

Copper (II) sulfate is used in the copper-copper sulfate reference electrode.

It is also used for etching.
