What is Gallium?

Gallium is the chemical element with atomic number 31, symbol Ga. It is a silver colored metal. It belongs to group 13 of the periodic table.

Thanks to its low melting point (29.76°C) it melts in the hand. Traces of it can be found in bauxite and zinc minerals.

What is Gallium used for?

Gallium is mainly used in the manufacture of various semiconductor materials. Among binary semiconductors III-V, gallium arsenide (GaAs), gallium antimonide (GaSb), gallium phosphide (GaP) and gallium nitride (GaN) may be particularly mentioned, and among the most important ternary semiconductors aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs) and aluminum gallium nitride ( AlGaN). Of these materials, gallium arsenide is the most common, the second most widely used semiconductor material after silicon; compared to the latter, it has interesting electronic and optoelectronic properties, in particular a greater conductivity of electrons, as well as a direct aperture that, unlike silicon, allows it to be used in optoelectronic applications, both in device emission (LED) as in detection ( photo detector). It is the substrate of choice for active microwave components. Gallium is used for gas-phase epitaxy thin film deposition (MOCVD) for the deposition of GaAs or GaN epitaxial layers, in two forms:

in the form of trimethylgallium (known as TMGa, with the formula (CH3)3Ga whose CAS number is 1445-79-0) or
in the form of triethylgallium (known as TEGa, with the formula (C2H5)3Ga, whose CAS number is 1115-99-7).

The alloy of gallium with indium and tin, called galinstan, has been commonly used in thermometers since the mercury ban.

A radioisotope of gallium, 67Ga, is used in medical imaging (gallium-67 scintigraphy), in detecting sites of inflammation, sites of infection - osteomyelitis, abscesses and other local infections, tuberculosis and mycobacterial infections, P-pneumonia Carinei, etc. - as well as when looking for certain neoplasias, especially lymphomas and hepatocellular carcinomas. Another radioisotope, 68Ga, is currently marginally used as a positron emitter in positron emission tomography (PET scan).

Gallium is also typically the ion source used in the focused ion probe.
