Glycolic acid (hydroxyacetic acid) is the simplest α-hydroxycarboxylic acid with the formula HOCH2 - COOH. As with other primary alcohols, the hydroxymethyl group can be oxidized via the aldehyde (glyoxylic acid) to the carboxy group (oxalic acid).
Glycolic acid is found in unripe grapes, in sugarcane juice, in sugar beets, in rosemary leaves. It is also found in glacial acetic acid as an oxidation product. Due to its natural appearance, glycolic acid is counted among the fruit acids.
Glycolic acid is used as a 20% aqueous solution to remove rust from pipelines by chelating calcium and iron ions. In the textile industry, the acid is used for preservation ("bleaching") and as a catalyst, in the leather industry for descaling animal skins, for chromium tanning and for paints. Glycolic acid is also used in synthesis (as a mild organic acid) and as a starting material for various esters.
In addition, the fruit acid glycolic acid is used for skin care. Here it performs a peeling function and thus improves the appearance of the skin.
In its pure form, glycolic acid has a corrosive effect on the eyes, skin, mucous membranes and respiratory tract.
