Of all bulk chemicals, sulfuric acid is the most widely produced and most widely used. The national production of sulfuric acid - in addition to that of chlorine gas - is usually a good indicator of the industrial development level of a country. In 2012, global production was about 250 million tons, of which 34% was produced in China, 13.6% in the United States, 5% in India, 5% in Russia and 3.4% in Morocco.
About 60% of the sulfuric acid produced is used in the fertilizer industry, in particular for the manufacture of superphosphate, ammonium phosphate and ammonium sulphate. About 15% is consumed by the chemical industry, where it is used in the production of detergents, synthetic resins, pharmaceutical products , catalysts, insecticides, anti-freeze agents and various fine chemicals for chemical research. Sulfuric acid is also used in a number of industrial processes, such as the refining of petroleum (5%) and in the drying of non-basic gases. 7% is used in the digestion of metals from ores and 2% is used by the coloring industry to make paints and inks, the remainder is used in the production of explosives, cellophane, viscose, lubricants and batteries.
