Benzyl alcohol is an organic compound with the gross formula C7H8O. The benzyl group is often shortened to Bn, so that BnOH becomes a short notation for benzyl alcohol. Benzyl alcohol is a colorless liquid with a weak aromatic odor. The substance is a natural constituent of various essential oils, including ylang ylang oil [1] and jasmine and hyacinth absolute. Due to its polarity, benzyl alcohol is also a suitable solvent for various compounds. Furthermore, the fabric has a low vapor pressure and is hardly toxic.
Benzyl alcohol is sparingly soluble in water, but miscible in all proportions with other alcohols and diethyl ether. Benzyl alcohol forms an azeotrope with water: a mixture with 9% by weight benzyl alcohol boils at 99.9 ° C.
Like all alcohols, benzyl alcohol also reacts with carboxylic acids to form esters.
