What is Ammonium Iron(III) Citrate?
Ammonium iron(III) citrate (also known as iron(III) ammonium citrate or ammonium iron citrate) has the formula (NH4)5[Fe(C6H4O7)2]. A distinctive feature of this compound is that it is very soluble in water, unlike iron citrate which is not very soluble.
In its crystal structure, each part of citric acid has lost four protons. The deprotonated hydroxyl group and two of the carboxylate groups ligate to the iron(III) center, while the third carboxylate group coordinates with the ammonium
What is Ammonium Iron(III) citrate used for?
As a food ingredient, it has E number E381 and is used as an acidity regulator. Particularly used in the Scottish drink Irn-Bru. In water purification it is used as a reducing agent of metal salts with low activity such as gold and silver.
With potassium ferricyanide as part of the cyanotype photographic process
Used in Kligler's Iron Agar (KIA) test to identify enterobacteriaceae bacteria by observing their metabolism of various sugars, producing hydrogen sulfide
