1-Naphthylacetic acid is an acetic acid substituted with a naphthyl group, i.e. a carboxylic acid and one of the two possible positional isomers of the naphthylacetic acids. Like many aromatic substituted acetic acids, it exhibits auxin analogous effect in plants. Hence, it is used as a synthetic phytohormone.
use
1-Naphthylacetic acid has the same effect as the natural auxin indole-3-acetic acid (IES), with which there is a structural relationship. It is used in the vegetative propagation of plants, where it is the main constituent of various rooting hormones ("root fix") for propagation of cuttings.
In fruit cultivation, NAA can be used in high concentrations (1000 ppm) to control root and water sprouts. NAA is used in low concentrations (10-20 ppm) for chemical dilution when used during flowering up to 14 days later or against premature fruit drop 2-4 weeks before harvest
