What is Sodium Metabisulphite?
Sodium disulphite, (Na2S2O5), also known as sodium pyrosulphite or sodium metabisulphite, is a sodium salt of the unstable disulfuric acid in free form.
Sodium disulfite can easily be confused with sodium bisulfite.
What is Sodium Metabisulfite used for?
In Europe, sodium disulphite is used as a food additive (E 223), mainly as a preservative and antioxidant. It is used in dried fruits, horseradish mass, fruit and vegetable preparations, potato dishes, ready meals, fruit juices and jams. It is also used in combination with sorbic acid and benzoic acid. It can be used for diagnosing sickle cell tests to remove oxygen from hemoglobin in sickle cell anemia and to accelerate sickle formation.
Sodium disulphite is also used as a reducing agent in the manufacture of synthetic fibres, to detoxify chromium-containing wastewater in electroplating plants and in the photo and construction chemical industry.
