What is Hexane?
Hexane is a chemical compound that belongs to alkanes (saturated hydrocarbons). It is a colorless liquid with the molecular formula C6H14. It is the straight-chain isomer of the five hexane isomers.
What is hexane used for?
Hexane is used in organic chemistry as a solvent and reaction medium in polymerizations, as a diluent for fast-drying paints, printing inks and adhesives, and as an eluent and solvent in thin layer chromatography. It is still used for the production of plastics and synthetic rubber and for oil and grease extraction. Because it does not attack polystyrene, unlike many organic solvents, and is highly volatile, it is used as a solvent for Styrofoam glue.
