What is Sodium Fluoride?
Sodium fluoride is a chemical compound with the formula NaF. It is a colorless solid that is used as a source of fluoride ions in various applications. It is cheaper and less hygroscopic than potassium fluoride.
Sodium fluoride is one of the "essential medicines" listed by the World Health Organization.
Sodium fluoride is very toxic and inhaling it alone can be dangerous. It affects the circulatory system, heart, skeleton, central nervous system and kidneys.
On the other hand, it is very irritating to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract.
In case of inhalation, it is necessary to keep away from all sources of dust, blow your nose, breathe under artificial oxygen if necessary and consult a doctor. In case of contact with eyes and skin, rinse thoroughly with water and check for complications.
What is Sodium Fluoride used for?
-Dentistry
Fluoride salts are often added to municipal drinking water (as well as some foods in some countries) to maintain dental health. Fluoride improves tooth strength by forming fluorapatite, a natural component of tooth enamel. Although sodium fluoride is used to fluoridate water and is in fact the standard by which other fluorine compounds of water are measured, hexafluorosilicic acid (H2SiF6) and its sodium salts (Na2SiF6) are most common in the United States.
-Chemistry
Sodium fluoride has a variety of specialty chemical uses in synthesis and extractive metallurgy. Reacts with electrophilic chlorides including acyl chlorides, sulfur chlorides and phosphorus chloride. Like other fluorides, sodium fluoride is used in desylation in organic synthesis. Sodium fluoride can be used to produce hydrofluorocarbons via the Finkelstein reaction; this process has the advantage of being easy to perform on a small scale, but is rarely used on an industrial scale due to the existence of more effective techniques (e.g. electrofluorination, Fowler process).
