What is Ammonium Iron(III) Oxalate?
Ammonium trioxalatoferrate (III) is a complex of trivalent iron with oxalate anions as ligands and ammonium ions for charge compensation. As a trihydrate, it has the semi-structural formula (NH4)3[Fe(C2O4)3] · 3 H2O. The CAS number is 13268-42-3
Ammonium Iron(III) oxalate is a green crystalline compound that is easily soluble in water.
The Fe3+ ion is complexed octahedrally by three oxalate ions. The resulting charge of -3 on the complex is balanced by three ammonium ions.
What is ammonium Iron(III) oxalate used for?
It is used in anodizing, the surface treatment of aluminum, to create a gold hue.
Exposure to light leads to decomposition producing carbon dioxide and iron(II) compounds. This property allows it to be used to measure light. In artistic photography, it is part of the solution for creating cyanotypes.
