Information

Calcium hydrogen phosphate, also called dicalcium phosphate, is a calcium salt of orthophosphoric acid, belongs to the phosphates and has the composition CaHPO4.

Calcium hydrogen phosphate naturally occurs in various modifications. Calcium hydrogen phosphate anhydrous occurs naturally as monetite, the dihydrate (CaHPO4 2H2O) is known as brushite. The water of crystallization from the dihydrate is split off at 109 ° C. Technically, calcium hydrogen phosphate is produced by reacting calcium hydroxide with phosphoric acid at high temperatures.

-Use

Calcium hydrogen phosphate is an acidity regulator and is used, for example, in the food industry for canned cherry cake fillings. The shelf life of potato products is extended and they are made lighter. The creaminess of processed cheese is increased. It is used as an emulsifier in the baking industry. The water content of ham and cooked sausage can be increased by adding calcium hydrogen phosphate. Calcium hydrogen phosphate, together with calcium dihydrogen phosphate and calcium phosphate, is approved in the EU as a food additive under the general number E 341 ("calcium phosphate") for certain foods with varying limits on maximum amounts, including organic foods. According to the Additive Approval Ordinance, these - largely uniform for most approved phosphates - are individual specifications for a wide variety of foods. The maximum allowable amounts range from 0.5 to 50 grams per kilogram (in creamer for vending machines) or the absence of a fixed restriction (quantum satis - as required, for food supplements and sometimes for chewing gum). For the total amount of phosphoric acid and phosphates ingested, a permitted daily dose of 70 milligrams per kilogram of body weight was established.

In smaller quantities it is used for pest control against grain beetles and moths. In homeopathy it is also known as calcium phosphoric. The product is mainly used to treat indigestion, bone pain and toothache.

It is also used as a feed additive and is found in many fertilizers, calcium supplements and toothpastes.
