What is Ammonium Sulfate?
Ammonium sulfate (E517) is a chemical compound from the group of salts formed when ammonia reacts with sulfuric acid. A closely related salt is ammonium hydrogen sulfate.
Ammonium sulfate is not very hygroscopic, but it is easily soluble in water. The aqueous solutions are weakly acidic.
What is Ammonium Sulphate used for?
Ammonium sulfate is an important fertilizer additive. In biological sewage treatment plants it is used as a component of nutrient mixtures for the cultures of microorganisms.
In the chemical industry it is used, among other things, as a precipitating agent for protein, as a flotation agent and for the production of fire extinguishing powder and flame retardants. The leather industry uses it for dyeing, the paper industry for flame retardant paper.
In biochemistry, ammonium sulfate is used to salt out proteins (ammonium sulfate precipitation). In addition, cells and tissue are preserved in a saturated ammonium sulfate solution to protect the RNA from degradation.
Ammonium sulfate is also added to foods as a carrier for other additives. In the EU it is approved as a food additive with the number E 517 only as a carrier or carrier solvent.
In winemaking, ammonium sulfate is used as a component of nutrient salt mixtures for yeast, especially to stimulate cell reproduction during fermentation.
