What is Calcium Oxide?

Calcium oxide, also quick lime, lime earth, lime or free lime, chemical formula CaO, is a white crystalline substance that reacts with water, generating strong heat. During this reaction, calcium hydroxide (slaked lime) is formed.

What is calcium oxide used for?

Calcined and subsequently slaked (with water) lime is used in construction as an additive to mortar and plaster and for the industrial production of sand-lime bricks. It is also a minor component of cement clinker. In chemistry, the substance is also used as a desiccant and to absorb carbon dioxide. Other areas of application of quicklime are z. B. fertilizer lime, the production of calcium carbide and its use for the production of lime mortar, lime plaster and lime paint and for use as a neutralizing agent.

One of the most important areas of application is the desulphurization of pig iron, where the sulfur acts as a companion and must be extracted on its way to the steel (converter). Lime (CaO) is either blown into the pig iron or mixed with a stirrer. The lime combines with the sulfur to form calcium sulfide [CaS], rises to the surface and is deposited there as slag. After desulfurization, this is removed with a scraper.

The slaked lime is used, among other things, as an alternative to limestone in flue gas desulphurisation. The amount used is about 1.8 times less than that of limestone. The gypsum (calcium sulfate) obtained from quicklime has a whiteness of 80% and can be used commercially. Due to the high reactivity, lower consumption quantities are required. The disadvantage is the significantly higher price compared to limestone.

By reacting with chlorine, calcium hydroxide can be converted into chlorinated lime.

Calcium oxide is added to foods as an acidity regulator. It mainly serves as a so-called processing aid that is no longer present in the finished food. It is generally approved for food use in the EU as a food additive under the designation E 529 without maximum quantity restrictions, but with the condition that only the technically required amount is used (quantum satis).

In the past, calcium oxide was used for caustic soda and potash, which was of great importance for soap production. Calcium oxide was also used as a caustic lime charge from guns and blind pots thrown from slingshots.

Thanks to its odour-binding effect, quicklime can also be used in open field toilets (outbuildings).

It was also used to disinfect markets and cemeteries.

Quicklime is sometimes used instead of slaked lime to disinfect stables (the "lime" of stables). However, it must not come into contact with straw or similar highly flammable material, as the temperature of around 180°C, which arises during the reaction with moisture, may in rare cases be sufficient to ignite.
