What is Potassium Bromide?
Potassium bromide is the potassium salt of hydrogen bromide, which forms colorless crystals that are even more soluble in water than potassium chloride.
Potassium bromide exhibits so-called "cold flow" under high pressure (0.7 to 1.0 GPa),d. that is, it then behaves like a highly viscous liquid. KBr is transparent in IR light and is therefore used as a sample carrier in infrared spectroscopy. It does not form hydrates.
The standard enthalpy of formation of potassium bromide is ΔHf0 = -392 kJ/mol
The salt is very soluble in water. The solubility increases with increasing temperature.
What is Potassium Bromide used for?
Potassium bromide is used to produce silver bromide emulsions on films and plates for photographic films. In photographic developers, it counteracts condensation and slows down development.
Due to its high optical transparency to electromagnetic waves in the range of 0.23 to 26.0 m, single crystals of KBr are used for the production of optical components, such as e.g. B. Lenses and prisms used for infrared optics. Since it also flows a little cold (see above), solids for infrared spectroscopy are embedded in it, so-called potassium bromide pellets.
