What is Tri-Ethylene Glycol?
Triethylene glycol is a chemical compound with the formula HOCH2CH2OCH2CH2OCH2CH2OH. It is a colorless viscous liquid — it melts at -7°C and boils at 285°C — it is used as a plasticizer for vinyl, as a disinfectant, as a moisture absorber for natural gas and in air conditioning systems, or as an additive to hydraulic fluids and brake fluids.
Triethylene glycol is miscible with water and soluble in ethanol, acetone, acetic acid, glycerol, pyridine and aldehydes. It is poorly miscible with diethyl ether and immiscible with oils, fats and hydrocarbons. It is produced commercially as a by-product of the oxidation of ethylene CH2=CH2 at high temperature and in the presence of silver(I)oxide Ag2O as a catalyst, followed by hydration of ethylene oxide C2H4O to give mono-, di-, tri- and tetraethylene glycol.
What is Triethylene Glycol used for?
Triethylene glycol is used by the oil industry to "dehydrate" natural gas to prevent freeze buildup in pipelines; the absorbed water is then removed by passing the compound through a system where it is first heated to a high temperature to dry it and then cooled to condense and be recycled for natural gas drying. In addition to water, triethylene glycol also absorbs benzene, which gradually accumulates in the material - in concentrations greater than 0.5 g l-1 - and must be handled carefully when disposed of as industrial waste.
Triethylene glycol can also be used to dehydrate other gases, for example carbon dioxide CO2, hydrogen sulfide H2S and other oxygen-containing gases.
