What is Potassium Iodate?
Potassium iodate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula KIO3.
Potassium iodate is an oxidizing agent and therefore can cause fire when in contact with combustible or reducing materials.
It is recommended to keep it away from heat, to avoid exposure to shock, friction, and to keep it away from flammable materials, reducing agents, aluminum, organic compounds, carbon, hydrogen peroxide and sulfides.
What is potassium iodate used for?
Potassium iodate is used in some countries instead of potassium iodide to iodize table salt because it is more stable in humid conditions, in porous packaging, and in low purity salt; but unlike the latter, it is an intestinal irritant. 1.7 g of potassium iodate corresponds to 1.3 g of potassium iodide and 1 g of iodine. It is also sometimes part of the ingredients of infant formula.
Like potassium bromate, potassium iodate is sometimes used as a food additive, as an aid in flour to firm up dough and increase baking time.
