What is Thymol?
Thymol (2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol) is a colorless crystalline substance with a distinctive odor that occurs naturally in the essential oils of thyme (Thymus vulgaris) or oregano (Origanum majorana), where cymene and timene are found simultaneously. Adolph Edvard Arppe also demonstrated their existence in the essence of monarda (Monarda punctata) and the Scottish chemist John Stenhouse in that of Ptychotis ajowan.
Thymol belongs to the group of terpenes, and an isomer of thymol is carvacrol, and the formula C10H14O is not enough to fully characterize this chemical composition, and it is necessary to use the constitutional formula to avoid confusion.
Like phenols in general, thymol dissolves in bases and forms the corresponding salt.
Hydrogenation of thymol gives the racemic mixture of (+/-)-menthol.
What is Thymol used for?
Thymol is characterized by its disinfecting and fungicidal power. Due to its pleasant taste, it is present in the formulation of various mouthwashes, toothpastes, etc. A 5% solution of thymol in ethanol is used for skin disinfection and against fungal infections.
In veterinary medicine it is also used against skin infections and to stimulate digestion.
In beekeeping, it is used to control a parasitic bee mite called varroa.
