What is Strontium Chloride?
Strontium chloride (SrCl2) is a salt of strontium and chloride with formula SrCl2. It is a classic salt that forms a neutral aqueous solution. Like all strontium compounds, this salt gives off a flame with a bright red color during combustion and is therefore used for fireworks to obtain this color. Its chemical properties lie between those of barium chloride, which is more toxic, and calcium chloride.
What is strontium chloride used for?
Strontium chloride is the precursor to other strontium compounds, such as yellow strontium chromate, which is used as a corrosion inhibitor for aluminum. The precipitation processes are analogous to those of isostructural sulfates:
SrCl2 + Na2CrO4 → SrCrO4 + 2 NaCl
Strontium chloride is often used as a red dye in pyrotechnics. It is used in small quantities in the manufacture of glass and metallurgy.
The radioactive isotope strontium-89, used to treat metastatic bone pain by metabolic radiotherapy, is usually administered in the form of strontium chloride.
Saltwater aquariums require small amounts of strontium chloride, which is consumed in the production of the exoskeleton of some species of plankton.
