What is Magnesium Hydroxide?
Magnesium hydroxide is an inorganic compound with the formula Mg(OH)2. This base is in the form of a powder that is practically insoluble in water.
"Milk of magnesia" is a suspension of magnesium hydroxide in its saturated solution, having a milky appearance. The natural mineral form is known as brucite.
Magnesium hydroxide is used therapeutically as an antacid (to soothe heartburn), a laxative, and as a natural body deodorant (odorless and non-irritating to the skin).
What is magnesium hydroxide used for?
Magnesium hydroxide is used in low doses as an antacid to neutralize stomach acid.
It is contraindicated in cases of severe renal insufficiency and phosphorus depletion. In particular, it is marketed in combination with aluminum hydroxide, under the names Gelox and Maalox. Magnesium hydroxide is also used in higher doses as a laxative, marketed as Chlorumagene and in the form of a "Lubentyl with Magnesium Oxide" mixture
Most magnesium hydroxide produced for industrial purposes is further processed into magnesium oxide by calcination (baking) at 500-600 °C.
Magnesium hydroxide is used as an edible oil additive (to bind sulfur dioxide), as a flocculant for wastewater treatment, as a flame retardant in thermoplastics (polyolefins, PVC) and elastomers, and as an additive in detergents.
Magnesium hydroxide is added to foods as an acidity regulator or anti-caking agent. It is approved in the EU as a food additive with the E number E 528.
