What is N-Heptane?
Heptane is a saturated hydrocarbon of the alkane family with the formula C7H16. It exists in the form of 9 isomers. One of them, n-heptane, is used as a fuel component in an anti-knock engine test, a fuel with 100% n-heptane is the zero point of the octane number (100 point is 100% octane).
What is N-heptane used for?
Heptane (and its many isomers) is used in laboratories as a completely non-polar solvent. Since it is liquid at room temperature and pressure, it is easy to transport and store.
Heptane is commercially available as a pure substance or mixed with its isomers, for use in paints and coatings, as well as neat for research and development, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and as a minor component in gasoline.
octane scale
n-heptane is the zero point on the octane rating. It was chosen as the zero point of the octane number, because of the possibility of obtaining very pure n-heptane, without being mixed with other heptane isomers or other alkanes.
