What is Potassium Sulfate?
Potassium sulfate is the potassium salt of sulfuric acid with chemical formula K2SO4. It is a white solid with CAS number 7778-80-5.
What is Potassium Sulphate used for?
Potassium sulfate is used to produce potassium alum, potassium silicate, potassium persulfate, potash, phlegmatizers, synthetic rubber and compound fertilizers. It is also used in the removal of tartaric acid and has a wide range of applications in the dyes and pharmaceutical industries.
Potassium sulfate is used in food technology as a firming agent, acidity regulator or carrier. Potassium sulfate is used as a salt substitute in dietary foods. It is approved in the EU as a food additive with the number E515 without limiting the maximum amount (quantum satis) for all foods approved for additives.
It is also part of potash fertilizers used to fertilize chloride-sensitive crops, for example in viticulture.
Potassium sulfate is also used as an active ingredient in extinguishing powders (usually together with other alkali metal salts such as sodium hydrogen carbonate) for B and C fire classes.
It is also used as a homeopathic medicine. As Schüßler salt, it is used there for all scaly skin diseases, such as neurodermatitis and psoriasis.
