Information

What is Sodium Bromide?

Sodium bromide or sodium bromide is an inorganic salt with the formula NaBr. It has a high melting point and its crystalline structure is cubic, similar to that of sodium chloride. It is mostly used as a source of bromine in organic synthesis.

What is Sodium Bromide used for?

NaBr is the most commonly used inorganic bromine compound in industry. It can be used to obtain bromine gas by oxidizing bromine with chlorine gas:

2 NaBr + Cl2 → Br2 + 2NaCl

NaBr can also be used on a laboratory scale for the preparation of alkane cromide intermediates, 2 more reactive than the corresponding alkyl chlorides. This process is carried out via the so-called Finkelstein reaction:

NaBr + R-Cl → R-Br + NaCl

where R represents an alkyl group. Alkyl bromides (R-Br) show better reaction performance against nucleophiles in nucleophilic substitution reactions such as SN2 reactions.

- Biomedical applications

Bromide has anti-pileptic properties, therefore salts such as NaBr or KBr were used in the 19th and early 20th century to treat these symptoms of various types of epilepsy, such as catamenial, associated with menstruation, today phenobarbital is the option first

-Disinfectant

Various bromine salts are used in formulations of swimming pool disinfectant tablets.

-Laboratory

In addition to the uses mentioned above, as a source of Br2 or for the preparation of bromoalkanes, NaBr can be used to prepare hydrogen bromide, HBr, by adding a strong acid to NaBr:

2NaBr + H3PO4 → 2HBr(g) + NaH2PO4
