What is Sodium Sulphate?
Glauber's salt, miracle salt or sodium sulfate is a white crystalline salt with chemical formula Na2SO4 discovered by Rudolf Glauber and used for medicinal purposes (laxative) and in glass making.
What is Sodium Sulphate used for?
Sodium sulphate is used in the glass, textile and electroplating industries, and in the production of detergents and sulphate cellulose. In the laboratory, the anhydrous sodium sulfate is used to dry organic liquids (see below).
It may be used in foodstuffs as an acidity regulator and anti-caking agent (E number E514, jointly for sodium sulphate and sodium hydrogen sulphate).
Sodium sulfate loses its crystal structure around 32 °C. It therefore appears that it melts at that temperature, but in fact sodium sulfate dissolves in its crystal water. The latent heat associated with this is high, which makes sodium sulfate suitable for heat storage.
Sodium sulfate is also used as a laxative.
