What is Sodium Sulfide?

Sodium Sulfide, Na2S is a salt of hydrogen sulfide H2S, a very weak acid.

In its pure state, sodium sulfide is a colorless, crystalline solid that smells like rotten eggs and is present as the nonahydrate Na2S 9 H2O. The anhydrous version is odorless. Contact with acids (including carbon dioxide CO2, in the air we breathe) releases the toxic and flammable hydrogen sulfide. Finely divided, anhydrous sodium sulfide can self-ignite in air; it reacts violently with oxidizing agents such as potassium permanganate or potassium dichromate. It is easily soluble in water, the solution reacts strongly alkaline and is highly corrosive. The hydrates of sodium sulfide are not flammable, but they lose bound water when heated. With prolonged storage, the substance becomes yellowish due to slow oxidation with the formation of polysulfides. Sodium sulfide crystallizes in an antifluorite structure (cubic symmetry, space group Fm3m (space group No. 225)), with the lattice parameter a = 6.526 Å. At 7 GPa it turns into a high pressure form with an anti-PbCl2 structure (space group Pnma (No. 62)), at 16 GPa into a form with a Ni2In structure (space group P63 / mmc (No. 194)) .

What is Sodium Sulfide used for?

Sodium sulfide is used in tannery as a hair removal agent, in mining for ore flotation, in organic chemistry as a reducing agent, in wastewater treatment for heavy metal precipitation, and for the production of sulfur dyes. It is also used to color glass, to remove NOx (nitrogen oxides) from exhaust gases and to ferment wood. In black and white photography and lithography, it is used in the darkroom for sulfur toning (sepia tone).

What Safety Precautions Should I Take Before Using Chemicals?

It is always wise to work as safely as possible when working with chemicals. Even substances that do not seem dangerous at first can cause enormous damage if they get into your eyes. Therefore, always wear safety goggles. You also want to prevent chemicals from ending up on your skin, which is why it is important to always use good gloves or disposable gloves.

Respiratory protection is necessary for volatile substances, vaporous liquids and solids that dust. There are many different types of filters, so you should always refer to the MSDS to find out which filter you need. Many filters also specify which substances they are for.

In some cases it may be necessary to protect the whole body, in which case a plastic overall is needed, you can find it here.

When working with flammable and oxidizing substances, it is important to always have fire extinguishers and absorbents at hand. It is also useful to be able to clean up spills of aggressive chemicals immediately with absorbents and to dispose of them in accordance with international and/or local legislation.

If you need more information on how to handle a specific substance, always consult the safety data sheet. You can find this on the product page or request it via [email protected]
