What is Potassium Citrate?
Tri-Potassium Citrate is a potassium salt of citric acid. It is used in the food industry as an acid regulator and is coded as E 332. It is used as a drug for the treatment of kidney stones (Antiurolithiasic), as it is a calcium chelating agent in the same way.
It is a hygroscopic white powder, odorless and with a slightly salty taste due to the presence of potassium ions. It is very soluble in water, so it is administered orally in the form of a solution or pills.
What is Potassium Citrate used for?
- Medicine
Potassium citrate is mainly used to treat kidney stones. It is absorbed by the body very quickly after ingestion; excess potassium or citrate ions are excreted in the urine. Potassium citrate is an effective prophylactic against uric acid (a side effect of gout), cystine or calcium oxalate kidney stones, the active ingredient being in the case of organic stones the alkalinization of the urine and in the case of oxalate the increase in solubility by complex formation. The effectiveness does not apply to all stone compositions. A study of 500 patients with recurrent kidney stones showed that treatment with potassium citrate reduced the average number of stones per year from two to half a year.
Like many other potassium salts, potassium citrate can prevent cardiac arrhythmias caused by a lack of potassium in the blood. In addition, potassium citrate has been shown in clinical studies to counteract calcium loss through the kidneys and calcium breakdown from the bones. A prospective controlled intervention study in 161 postmenopausal women with osteopenia showed that the partial neutralization of a diet-induced acid load (consumption of 30 mmol potassium from potassium citrate per day, equivalent to 3.24 g potassium citrate) over a 12-month period significantly increased bone density. and bone structure significantly improved. Potassium citrate was found to be as effective as raloxifene, an estrogen receptor modulator used in the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. In addition, potassium citrate has a blood pressure lowering effect and has been shown to lower blood pressure as effectively as potassium chloride.
- Food technology
Potassium citrate is used as an acidity regulator and acidity regulator, as well as a complexing agent or melting salt. It is often found as an acidifier in drinks such as lemonades or used in pectin gelling. It is widely approved in the EU as a food additive with number E 332 without maximum quantity restrictions (quantum satis) for all foods.
