What is Triethanolamine?
Triethanolamine is also known as trolamine, or by its systematic name 2,2',2-nitrilotriethanol. The rough formula is C6H15NO3.
It is an organic chemical compound that is a tertiary amine and a trialcohol. Like other amines, triethanolamine acts as a weak base due to its single electron pair on the nitrogen atom.
What is Triethanolamine used for?
Triethanolamine is used to adjust the pH in cosmetic preparations, hygiene and cleaning products. Cosmetic and hygiene products in which it is used for this purpose include skin lotions, eye gels, hydroalcoholic gels, moisturizers, shampoos, shaving creams, etc.
Like any amine, it has the potential to produce nitrosamines, but given the low concentrations used in cosmetic products, the chances of this happening are very slim and must be added to the fact that nitrosamines cannot theoretically penetrate the skin.
Like sodium hydroxide and ammonia, it can be used as a saponification base in the manufacture of surfactants for various applications, such as triethanolamine lauryl sulfate and triethanolamine lauryl ether sulfate, which are less aggressive than comparable sodium and ammonium compounds, and therefore, they can be used in mild shampoos and conditioners for children, as they cause less irritation to the eyes and skin, especially the scalp.
